Occupy Wall Street? You Betcha!

I’m pretty surprised at the lack of TV coverage about the Wall Street protests, but I can guess why it’s not happening. Much of the media, of which I am sort of a part, are deeply afraid of this story because they are owned by you-know-who. They will not be able to ignore it much longer and I, for one, am glad. And I’m going to do my bit, right here, on Tumblr, because it would be hard to get it placed anywhere else except maybe Facebook.
Sometimes I have an almost apocalyptic vision of about ten years in the future, in which thousands of unkempt, gray haired, wild-eyed people wander the streets, looking for food and health care. They all worked for decades, but they have nothing. Nothing. And no one will help them.
And in the present, I see things that make me a little - no, a lot - sad. The 70 year-old guy bagging groceries who clearly should be a retiree. The well groomed middle aged woman behind the cash register at Anthropologie, with nice jewelry and a bitter twist to her mouth. My guess is the husband lost the job, because she doesn’t look like she was ever a career gal. These people never meet your eye, and I find it heartbreaking.
Is Wall Street to blame? Along with the breathtaking cynicism of DC, you betcha.
