News Break
I’ve been taking one - a News Break that is. Sometimes the less I know, the less I stress. However, I do like to stay relatively well informed, so I’m checking back in. What did I miss? Apparently not much - the GOP field is still in Bizarroland and Black Friday was a mess and everybody ate too much and the stock market is going up and down and not enough people have jobs and kids...

Eek, a germ.
I recently helped a friend move and the items contained at least four really big, and I mean big, boxes containing a mind-boggling array of cleaning compounds. She refused to toss a single one of them.
In my own place, there are disinfectant wipes, stainless steel cleaners, soft scrubs, hard scrubs, wood cleaners, green cleaners, deadly poison cleaners, vinegar, baking soda, pop up sponges (I...

Occupy Wall Street? You Betcha!
I’m pretty surprised at the lack of TV coverage about the Wall Street protests, but I can guess why it’s not happening. Much of the media, of which I am sort of a part, are deeply afraid of this story because they are owned by you-know-who. They will not be able to ignore it much longer and I, for one, am glad. And I’m going to do my bit, right here, on Tumblr,...
Ode to a Vacuum Cleaner (with thanks to JessBen)
I’m having friends over for dinner and that means hauling out the Hoover and attending to a chore I despise. That’s why I asked my husband to vacuum the house.
But it also puts me in mind of the upcoming anniversary of the patent for the first vacuum cleaner, issued on October 3rd, 1899. Granted, it was gasoline powered, not to...

Magical Thinking: the downside
I’m writing some stuff about people who have experienced, shall we say, turbulence in their careers. They are all very sharp and talented and managed through to great success, but for whatever reason, they had to buckle their seat belts periodically. I also happen to be doing something on anxiety disorders, and here’s what I’ve noticed. The people who found their way through some...
In the 'hood.
I’ve lived in at least a couple of the world’s great cities, but where I am now is a very eclectic little piece of the planet . We have, to name a few, a former mayor of the funkadelic town, Baltimore, (home to an amazingly high ratio of good movie directors,) an artist, a physicist, and a husband and wife who are both pilots, which around here means they guide the huge shipping-...
